We've heard some negative claims made about one of our candidates

We've heard some negative claims made about one of our candidates. KVNU has since publicly corrected the record. Here are the details.

On Friday, October 9, 2026, KVNU's For The People host Jason Williams opened Hour 1 with a correction to something said the day before on the show's Candidate Spotlight with Patrick Belmont, the Independent candidate for Utah House District 3.

During that Oct. 8 interview, Belmont said Rep. Jason Thompson didn't show up at his own town hall. Williams told listeners that isn't an accurate description of what happened. After the Canyon Road fire, Thompson announced a wildfire-themed town hall that was to bring together experts such as state forestry and local fire officials, and sent a press release inviting the media and the public. That town hall was rescheduled. Miscommunication meant some people, including Williams himself, didn't get word of the change and showed up at the original time. The town hall did take place later.

Williams said a listener flagged the remark, and he wanted to set the record straight for the sake of honesty in the conversation. He noted how emotional and heated campaigning in the HD3 race has become for both candidates, and he discussed mailers from out-of-state PACs criticizing Thompson, saying he'd like to see more transparency about where that money comes from.

Williams said Thompson is expected to join For The People the following week. Thompson is the Republican nominee for Utah House District 3 on the November 3 ballot.
